Every semester, the joke that “STEM majors can’t write” makes the rounds in my social circles. It’s sometimes used as a self-deprecating remark from my STEM friends struggling through difficult final papers, or a retort by my non-STEM friends to the counterpart joke about non-STEM majors and math.
What frustrates me about this writing joke isn’t the semesterly squabble around whether it’s true or not. I’m frustrated because, as a CS major at Princeton, I’ve come across few opportunities to write about my interests in tech-related issues facing society. For example, campus newspapers don’t have technology sections, and the related tech policy center and student groups (while I love them dearly) offer intriguing discussion forums but no platforms for writing.
So… to fill this space… I’m starting a newsletter this summer!
I’ve had this itch to write for a while now. My hope is that writing on these social issues in tech will further awareness about what the problems are and generate discussions on what we might be able to do.
I’m currently planning on bi-weekly issues, heavy doses of tech policy and AI ethics, possible guest writers or collaborations, and (quirky) summer updates at the end of each issue :)
Sign up now so you don’t miss the first issue!
In the meantime, tell your friends! Comments always welcome too! I’ll also limit the clickbait titles going forward 😎
